Dropped 2lb in the weights this time around, there could be some each-way mileage in his big price, returning to this circuit. A race which is likely to run at a furious gallop, with number contenders for this valuable prize for the Hunter Chasers and amateur jockeys. It is run over the exact same Gold Cup distance, which offers an interesting angle for viewers.

I think an Each Way bet on Hiddenvalley Lake at 8/1 – 9/1 is the way to go here. A wide-open renewal of this stamina-sapping Grade 1 hurdle prize, where SEABANK BISTRO is taken to cause an upset at attractive odds. This race is often won at big odds, with favourites having an awful record in the event (the last favourite to win was At Fishers Cross in 2013). The selection is a typical Willie Mullins unexposed type, who scored a maiden hurdle at Naas in January.

Trained by Colin Tizzard, his sole defeat in four progressive chase starts was when well seen off, but still best of the rest, behind Edwardstone in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown in December.

The second won next time and was rated 89 when taking on handicappers for the first time, the third – also trained by Joseph – has won a couple of minor hurdle races, and the fourth won a Leopardstown maiden next time.

• But I’d be hard pushed to bet against any of this quintet in the win slot if they trotted round at the start.
• She was desperately unlucky not to win the 1,000 Guineas here in May and stepping up in trip in two French Group 1s has not really suited.
• Just one of the 94 runners sporting blinkers or cheekpieces won – Our Vic in the 2008 Ryanair – and such horses’ place strikerate is poor, too.
• MITBAAHY is fancied to win the battle of the fastest horses on Goodwood’s card in the King George Qatar Stakes (3.35).
• Remarkably, backing all such runners returned an SP profit of 35 points.
• At 16-1 and bigger, with extra places on offer, that makes plenty of appeal.
• Just an even gallop in prospect in all likelihood despite the large field.

But if Energumene is ridden more conservatively, there are two possible dangers. A lot of data manipulation and a very short read later we can now say the answer is certainly ‘no’; which is unsurprising given the maturity of, and liquidity in, these markets. Nevertheless, when the media cries “certainty” and the market posits 4/6, punters are well served to beware. • Deviating the other way, to soft, we see a fairly consistent picture for winners of one to three previous races on soft turf.
• He’s not been nearly as flashy as those shorter in the market but he’s highly effective and has been well on top each time in spite of narrower margins of victory.
• Burning Victory was the beneficiary of Goshen’s black swan event at the last in the Triumph Hurdle of 2020 and she’s travelled all over the place since.

Unlucky not to win the NH Chase at Cheltenham a couple seasons ago and trainer’s UK strike rate is very good.
